The Romance of Steel: New Perspectives Inspired by 2 Modular Water Tank Projects

Discover how modular water tanks can become planters, gardens, and creative landscape structures, inspired by two projects in London.

Recently, while browsing the websites of other modular water tank manufacturers, I came across two particularly interesting projects.

As a team with 15 years of experience in modular water tank customization and material processing, my first reaction was simple:I never realized a modular water tank could be used like this.

In my previous understanding, water tanks were all about steel panels, bolts, tie rods, supports, flanges, and applications such as water storage, fire protection, irrigation, and industrial water supply.

They are naturally associated with industrial applications. They are strong, practical, and functional. We rarely associate them with words like “romance,” “landscape,” or “ecology.”

But these two projects showed us another possibility. Steel can be romantic, too.

Modular Sectional Water Tanks Transformed into Planters

When a Water Tank Becomes a Garden Along the Thames

One of the projects is located along the River Thames in the UK.

The project uses 41 planters, creating planting spaces that provide habitats for plants and local wildlife along the riverside. The exact construction and installation method is not clear from the information we have seen.

Instead of serving their traditional purpose of storing water, these modular steel structures have been transformed into a series of planting units while also serving a protective function.

The steel panels are still steel panels. What has changed is their purpose.

What particularly caught our attention was the way the modular structure appears to have been adapted for an outdoor environment. The panels use a hot-dip galvanized base with a special surface coating, providing additional protection against the damp conditions along the Thames.

In this project, the material and structural characteristics normally associated with a galvanized water tank have been put to a completely different use.

It is not storing water. It is growing plants.

And that gave us a very clear insight:

The value of a modular water tank may not be limited to water storage.

Once standardized panels can be freely combined and adapted, they can become functional modules within an urban landscape.

Building a Garden with Vertical Sectional Water Tanks

When a Water Tank Becomes a Raised Garden

The second project is located at an exhibition venue near the U.S. Embassy in London.

Here, the designer also moved away from the conventional way of using modular water tanks. Standardized modules were freely combined to create a raised garden with waterproofing and water-storage functions.

The original structural characteristics of the modular tank are still present, but the structure now serves several purposes at the same time:

function, landscaping, greenery, and spatial design.

The cold industrial appearance of the metal structure is completely transformed when surrounded by plants and flowers.

It made us ask another question:

If a modular water tank can become a garden, what else could it become?

After 15 Years in the Water Tank Industry, We Are Rethinking the Product

For the past 15 years, we have focused on modular water tank customization, manufacturing, and material processing.

We have worked with domestic water tanks, fire water tanks, industrial water tanks, irrigation tanks, and projects in different countries and regions around the world.

Inspired by these two projects, we have started looking at modular steel structures from a different perspective.

For example, in urban public spaces, modular panels could potentially be developed into movable planter barriers, creating green separation areas for roads, plazas, commercial spaces, and other public areas.

In architecture and commercial spaces, they could become architectural displays, landscape installations, or even large-scale visual landmarks. Through different colors, surface finishes, dimensions, and configurations, an industrial steel structure can become part of the overall visual design.

For certain temporary applications, with proper structural engineering, modular steel structures could also be explored for use as temporary flood barriers or water-retaining structures.

Taking the concept further into residential landscaping, they could potentially be developed into large garden ponds, ornamental fish ponds, or ecological water features.

In ecological design, different modules could even be combined to create animal shelters, bird habitats, or temporary refuges for urban wildlife.

Of course, these ideas are still at the exploration stage. Any real-world application would require professional engineering based on the specific use, including structural strength, waterproofing, load capacity, anchoring, material selection, and safety requirements.

But we believe that thinking about new applications is itself the beginning of innovation.

Can a Water Tank Really Only Store Water?

Perhaps not.

If you have an idea for a modular structure—whether it is a water tank, planter, landscape installation, or simply a concept that has not yet been brought to life—

we would love to hear about it.

With our experience in materials, structural design, manufacturing, and modular water tank production, we are happy to explore with you whether your idea can be turned into a practical solution.

Because we believe:

Good design is not just about making a product. It is about giving an ordinary product more possibilities.

And sometimes,

steel can have its own kind of romance.
