GRP Water Tank | Modular Fiberglass Water Storage Tank

GRP water tank panels are manufactured using food-grade unsaturated polyester resin and alkali-free glass fiber roving as the main raw materials. GRP panels offer excellent corrosion resistance and a long service life.

Their modular design allows panels of different sizes to be flexibly combined according to project requirements. With a relatively low cost, GRP water tanks provide an economical and practical water storage solution for commercial, industrial, and municipal applications.

The main raw materials used for GRP water tanks include food-grade unsaturated polyester resin, alkali-free glass fiber roving, thickener (MgO), initiator (curing agent), cross-linking agent, and other additives.

How Are GRP Water Tank Panels Manufactured?

1. Resin Preparation

The unsaturated polyester resin is mixed with the required thickener, initiator, and other additives according to the specified formulation and proportions to form a viscous polymer matrix.

2. Glass Fiber Mixing

A uniform layer of resin matrix is first applied onto a PE film carrier. The glass fiber roving is then cut into a specified length using a fiber-cutting machine and evenly distributed over the bottom layer of resin. Another layer of resin is applied over the glass fibers.

Depending on the required strength, this process can be repeated several times. The orientation of different glass fiber layers can be arranged in directions such as 0°, 90°, and ±45°, providing the panel with good mechanical strength in different directions.

3. Compaction and Impregnation

The material is passed through rollers to ensure that the resin fully coats and impregnates the glass fibers while removing trapped air from the composite material.

4. Thickening and Maturation

The composite material is allowed to undergo a controlled maturation process for a certain period of time. This increases its viscosity and allows it to reach the appropriate consistency for compression molding.

At this stage, a composite sheet with a certain thickness, consisting of resin and glass fibers, is formed.

5. Compression Molding

  • The composite material is divided and weighed according to the required panel thickness, and the PE film is removed.
  • The material is then placed into the mold and subjected to continuous high-temperature and high-pressure compression molding. The typical holding time is approximately 2–8 minutes, depending on the panel thickness and other process parameters.
  • After molding is completed, the panel is demolded, trimmed, and finished.

At this stage, the GRP water tank panel is fully formed and ready for further processing and assembly.

Water Tank & Panel Size Design

  • FRP/GRP panels are manufactured using standard molds. Common panel sizes include 1×1 m, 1×0.5 m, and 0.5×0.5 m.
  • The maximum tank height is 5 meters. For tanks exceeding 4 meters in height, external C-channel steel reinforcement is required.
  • Panel thickness varies according to the tank height and pressure resistance requirements, depending on the overall tank design.

For GRP/FRP water tanks, the accessories and installation methods are basically the same as those used for hot-dip galvanized water tanks in terms of overall structure and assembly.

However, for components such as flanges, water outlets, overflow outlets, and other areas that require openings in the panels, we recommend making the openings on site rather than in the factory. This is because the manufacturing process and material properties of GRP/FRP panels differ from those of hot-dip galvanized steel and stainless steel. Once an opening is made, the original panel strength may be affected, increasing the risk of secondary damage during transportation and handling.
