With global population growth, urbanization, industrial expansion, and the impact of climate change, water scarcity is becoming an increasingly serious challenge, especially in the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asian island countries, and arid regions. Therefore, developing seawater desalination, rainwater harvesting projects, and large-scale water storage systems has become an effective solution to address regional water shortages.

Our customer built a large-scale seawater desalination plant in Southeast Asia. By removing salts and impurities from seawater, the plant converts seawater into potable water, industrial water, and agricultural water. In the entire seawater desalination process, in addition to the core reverse osmosis equipment (RO System), large storage water tanks are also essential equipment to ensure the stable operation of the desalination system.

Seawater Desalination Plant

Municipal Water Supply

Municipal Water Supply

Municipal water supply systems require reliable storage tanks to ensure continuous water availability. Modular tanks offer large capacity, easy installation, and long-term performance.

For this project, the customer selected our large modular GRP water tanks, which were integrated with the seawater intake system, filtration equipment, reverse osmosis system, disinfection unit, and water supply system. With excellent corrosion resistance, flexible installation, and customizable capacity, our GRP tanks provide a stable and reliable water storage solution for seawater desalination projects.

Why Do Island Countries Need Seawater Desalination?

As we know, global freshwater resources are extremely limited. Freshwater accounts for only about 2.5% of the Earth’s total water resources, and the amount directly available for human use is less than 1%.

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 2.2 billion people worldwide still lack access to safely managed drinking water services, including around 703 million people without access to basic drinking water services.

Southeast Asian island countries have abundant marine resources, but due to geographical limitations, freshwater resources are often insufficient. These regions commonly face challenges such as:

  • Limited surface water resources and insufficient water reserves
  • Groundwater contamination caused by seawater intrusion

Therefore, seawater desalination has become an important solution for island countries to overcome water shortages.

Through seawater desalination systems, seawater can be converted into:

  • Residential drinking water
  • Hotel and tourism water supply
  • Industrial production water
  • Agricultural irrigation water
  • Municipal water supply

What Requirements Should Water Tanks for Seawater Desalination Meet?

Due to the high salinity, humidity, and corrosive environment of seawater, conventional storage equipment often cannot meet the requirements of desalination projects. Concrete reservoirs may also face problems such as unstable water quality, difficult cleaning, and complicated maintenance.

Therefore, storage tanks used in seawater desalination projects usually need to meet the following requirements:

1. Excellent Corrosion Resistance

Seawater contains high levels of salt, especially chloride ions, which can accelerate the corrosion of metal materials.

Therefore, water tanks need to provide:

  • Resistance to salt spray corrosion
  • Resistance to humid coastal environments
  • Long-term stable operation

For coastal areas and island projects, corrosion resistance is one of the most important factors when selecting water storage equipment.

2. Large-Capacity Water Storage

Seawater desalination plants usually require storage tanks designed according to the plant capacity to ensure continuous operation. The storage system needs to provide:

  • Large-scale water storage capacity
  • Customizable tank dimensions
  • Peak water demand regulation and backup capacity
  • Fast construction and flexible expansion

Compared with small storage equipment, large modular water tanks are more suitable for industrial and municipal water projects.

3. Excellent Sealing Performance and Water Quality Protection

After multiple purification processes, treated freshwater needs to maintain stable quality and avoid secondary contamination. Therefore, storage tanks should provide:

  • Prevention of external contaminants entering the tank
  • Reduction of sediment accumulation and secondary pollution
  • Easy cleaning and convenient maintenance

Why Are GRP Water Tanks Suitable for Seawater Desalination Projects?

Excellent Corrosion Resistance

GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) is a non-metallic composite material. Unlike traditional steel water tanks, GRP tanks are not easily affected by chloride ions in seawater.

Compared with ordinary steel tanks, GRP water tanks offer:

  • No rust problems
  • Strong resistance to salt spray corrosion
  • Reduced requirements for corrosion protection maintenance

Modular Design Suitable for Large Water Storage Projects

Large seawater desalination plants usually require hundreds or even thousands of cubic meters of storage capacity, which conventional tanks cannot easily achieve.

GRP modular water tanks feature:

  • Standardized panels
  • Factory prefabrication
  • On-site assembly
  • No requirement for large-scale civil construction

This design allows flexible capacity expansion and efficient project installation.

  • FRP/GRP panels are manufactured using standard molds. Common panel sizes include 1×1 m, 1×0.5 m, and 0.5×0.5 m.
  • The maximum tank height is 5 meters. For tanks exceeding 4 meters in height, external C-channel steel reinforcement is required.
  • Panel thickness varies according to the tank height and pressure resistance requirements, depending on the overall tank design.

Water Tank Structure

  • Panels (including bottom panel, wall panels, roof panel, and manhole cover);
  • Internal Components (including internal ladder, tie rods, supports, flanges, and rubber seals);
  • External Components (including external ladder, angle iron, tie plates, bolts, and nuts);
  • Base (Concrete beam,C-channel steel).

Easy Transportation, Ideal for Overseas Projects

Many seawater desalination plants are located on islands, remote coastal areas, or regions with limited infrastructure. In these locations, transporting and installing integrated large tanks can be extremely challenging and requires heavy lifting equipment.

Modular GRP tanks can be transported in sections and assembled on site, significantly reducing transportation and installation difficulties.

Long Service Life and Simple Maintenance

GRP water tanks have smooth internal surfaces that reduce dirt accumulation and make cleaning easier. Unlike concrete reservoirs, GRP tanks do not easily develop cracks or require complicated waterproofing treatments.

They also avoid problems such as salt and alkali deposits commonly found in concrete structures, reducing daily maintenance requirements.

Conclusion: GRP Modular Water Tanks Are an Ideal Choice for Seawater Desalination Storage

Recently, a Southeast Asian customer purchased our GRP water tanks for a seawater desalination plant project. The tank capacity reached 1,000 m³, mainly used for storing freshwater after seawater purification.

After installation, the customer provided positive feedback on the stable operation of the water storage system and expressed interest in future cooperation for plant expansion projects and replacement of existing equipment.

GRP modular water tanks have been widely used in island countries, coastal cities, seawater desalination plants, industrial mining areas, and large-scale water supply projects.
