China Steel Industry Advances High-End Smart Green Manufacturing Growth
China’s steel industry is upgrading toward smart, green, and high-end production, supporting EVs, robotics, and advanced manufacturing.
In recent years, China’s steel industry has been steadily advancing toward high-end, intelligent, and green transformation. As a result, the supply capacity of high-end steel has continued to strengthen, providing solid material support for emerging industries such as new energy vehicles, robotics, and high-end equipment manufacturing.

At the production front, a new generation of special steels is emerging at an accelerating pace. From high-performance steel used in nuclear power applications, to tinplate with a 50% improvement in ductility, and further to key materials used in robot motors and subsea pipelines, Chinese steel companies are continuously pushing technological boundaries. In other words, the industry is achieving large-scale application and domestic substitution of high-end steel materials.

Among them, a newly developed ultra-thin material known as “cicada wing steel” has attracted significant attention. It is only 0.07 mm thick at its thinnest point, almost as thin as a human hair. Although it looks extremely light and delicate, it is in fact highly flexible and strong. Moreover, it can be widely used in precision manufacturing and advanced industrial applications. Ultimately, these “small and light” materials represent China’s continuous progress toward extreme manufacturing precision.
According to the China Iron and Steel Association, since the beginning of this year, China’s steel industry has globally launched six core new steel products. What’s more, some of these materials—used in robotics, subsea engineering, and advanced equipment manufacturing—have already achieved nearly 100% domestic supply. Therefore, China’s self-sufficiency in high-end steel materials has been significantly improved.
Zhao Mingge, Chairman of the China Iron and Steel Association, stated that the continuous emergence of new products is essentially the result of steel enterprises quickly responding to structural demand shifts and market upgrades. In fact, the steel industry is accelerating its transformation from traditional “general-purpose supply” to “high-end customized manufacturing.”
Meanwhile, this transformation is strongly supported by the overall upgrading of China’s steel industrial system. Currently, China has three steel enterprises selected as global “Lighthouse Factories,” and has built 36 “excellent-level” smart factories and 2 “leading-level” smart factories. In addition, the digital control rate of key processes has reached 86%, significantly improving intelligent manufacturing capabilities.
At the same time, green and low-carbon development is also advancing in parallel. As a result, the resilience of the steel industry chain and supply chain continues to strengthen, providing solid support for China’s manufacturing industry to move toward the high end of the global value chain.
Industry experts also point out that, with continuous breakthroughs in application scenarios, China’s steel industry is gradually shifting from “scale advantage” to “technological advantage” and “innovation-driven advantage.”
