GRP/FRP/SMC Sectional Panel Water Tank
Key Points Tag :
What’s the difference between GRP, FRP, and SMC water tanks?
Made of glass reinforced plastic (GRP), also known as fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) or sheet molding compound (SMC), it features high durability and excellent corrosion resistance. Typically constructed as modular sectional panel water tanks, it is widely used in municipal water supply, fire-fighting systems, agriculture, commercial buildings, and industrial facilities.

SMC Panel Water Tanks
Among the many water tank solutions available on the market, GRP, FRP, and SMC sectional panel water tanks are the most common—and also the most frequently confused—types. So what exactly are the differences between them?
SMC ⊂ FRP ≈ GRP
FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic) and GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) are essentially the same type of composite material. The difference lies mainly in regional terminology and applicable standard systems. FRP is a more general and widely used term, while GRP is more commonly adopted in Europe, the Middle East, and Commonwealth countries, particularly within engineering and regulatory frameworks.
SMC (Sheet Molding Compound), on the other hand, is a specific molding process and panel form within the FRP/GRP material system, representing a more mature and higher-standard technical solution in the industry.
FRP Water Tanks: Widely Used but with Noticeable Quality Variations
As one of the earliest fiberglass water tank solutions, FRP panel water tanks are valued for their corrosion resistance, light weight, and relatively low cost. They have long been used in applications such as domestic water storage and agricultural irrigation. However, product quality can vary significantly depending on materials and manufacturing processes.
GRP Water Tanks: Greater Emphasis on Engineering Standards
Compared with general FRP tanks, GRP panel water tanks are more often associated with higher levels of standardization and compliance. They are better suited for municipal water supply systems, public buildings, and industrial projects. In international engineering markets, GRP tanks are commonly regarded as FRP water tanks designed to meet recognized engineering standards.
SMC Water Tanks: The Preferred Choice for High-End Engineering Projects
In recent years, SMC panel water tanks have increasingly become the mainstream solution for mid- to high-end engineering projects. Manufactured using pre-impregnated materials molded under high temperature and high pressure, SMC panels offer superior consistency in thickness, structural strength, and dimensional accuracy.Compared with traditional FRP/GRP products, SMC water tanks demonstrate clear advantages in impact resistance and sealing reliability. Their smooth, easy-to-clean surfaces also make them better suited to meeting strict hygiene and safety requirements.

- FRP/GRP panels are manufactured using standard molds. Common panel sizes include 1×1 m, 1×0.5 m, and 0.5×0.5 m.
- The maximum tank height is 5 meters. For tanks exceeding 4 meters in height, external C-channel steel reinforcement is required.
- Panel thickness varies according to the tank height and pressure resistance requirements, depending on the overall tank design.
