50,000L GRP Water Tank for Hospital Water Storage
Key Points Tag :
When it comes to buildings that require a high level of water supply continuity, water hygiene, and storage safety, hospitals are among the most demanding. Hospital operations directly affect patient care and involve a wide range of water applications, including patient wards, restrooms, operating rooms, medical staff and cleaning areas, kitchens, laundry rooms, and fire protection systems. Any interruption or instability in the water supply can directly affect normal hospital operations.
Therefore, a hospital water storage system must not only provide sufficient storage capacity and reliable water supply, but also take into consideration tank material, hygiene performance, corrosion resistance, installation space, and tank dimensions based on the hospital’s building structure and functional layout.

Domestic Water

Fire Protection Water

Purified Water & Special Medical Water
GRP/FRP sectional water tanks offer excellent corrosion resistance and feature a modular construction. When food-grade resin and other potable-water-compatible materials are used, they can be customized according to the hospital’s available space and applicable hygiene requirements. Since hygiene and material standards vary between countries and regions, stainless steel and hot-dip galvanized steel water tanks can also be suitable options depending on the specific project requirements.
1. Why Do Hospitals Need Water Storage Tanks?
Hospital water storage systems are mainly designed to address the following needs:
- Provide an emergency water supply when the municipal water supply is interrupted
- Meet peak water demand during periods of high consumption
- Ensure basic domestic water supply for patient wards and public areas
- Provide a reliable reserve water supply for fire protection systems
- Support secondary water boosting in high-rise buildings and work with booster pumps and water supply systems to maintain stable water pressure
- Meet hygiene and safety requirements for hospital water storage
Therefore, a hospital water tank is not simply a storage container. It is an important part of the hospital’s overall water supply system, supporting daily water consumption, emergency fire protection, water hygiene, and reliable water supply.
2. Where Are GRP Water Tanks Installed in Hospitals?
The installation location of a hospital water tank should be determined according to the building structure, functional areas, available space, and supporting medical facilities.

Basement
Basements are common locations for water tanks in hospitals and modern buildings. Domestic water tanks and fire water tanks can be installed in underground equipment areas and connected to municipal water supply pipes, booster pumps, and fire pumps.
GRP sectional water tanks are particularly suitable for basement installation. Their modular construction allows the panels to be transported separately and assembled on site, making them suitable for projects where access space is limited.
Rooftop or Elevated Equipment Floor
Some high-rise hospitals may install water tanks on rooftop platforms or elevated equipment floors. For example, water tanks may be installed alongside HVAC equipment on building service platforms for domestic water supply, emergency water storage, or gravity-fed water supply systems.
For rooftop water tank installation, the following factors should be carefully considered:
- Intended function
- Building load-bearing capacity
- Weight of the tank when fully filled
- Tank support foundation
- Protection of the waterproofing layer
- Sun protection
- Maintenance and inspection space
- Pipe connections
Pump Rooms and Equipment Rooms
Dedicated pump rooms and equipment rooms are common locations for hospital water tanks. These spaces allow the water tank to be integrated with booster pumps, fire pumps, water treatment equipment, and other components to form a complete water supply system.
GRP sectional water tanks are well suited to these applications because the panels can be transported separately and assembled on site, providing greater flexibility when working within restricted spaces.

Underground Water Tanks

For hospitals located in densely built areas where ground space is limited, composite underground water tanks can be installed beneath outdoor landscaped areas.
By utilizing underground space, these tanks can reduce the amount of ground-level space occupied by large water storage facilities while minimizing their impact on buildings, roads, and landscaping.
Depending on the intended application and project design requirements, underground tanks can be used for domestic water storage, fire water storage, and the collection and temporary storage of certain types of hospital wastewater, providing a more flexible underground storage solution.
However, wastewater storage facilities must be specifically designed according to the characteristics of the wastewater. For radioactive wastewater, highly corrosive chemical wastewater, and other special media, dedicated collection and storage systems should be designed in accordance with applicable regulations and professional engineering requirements.
3. Which Type of Water Tank Is Suitable for Hospitals?
Hospitals do not necessarily need to use the same type of water tank for every application. The appropriate tank should be selected according to water quality, application, storage capacity, installation environment, and applicable project standards.

Water Tank & Panel Size Design
- FRP/GRP panels are manufactured using standard molds. Common panel sizes include 1×1 m, 1×0.5 m, and 0.5×0.5 m.
- The maximum tank height is 5 meters. For tanks exceeding 4 meters in height, external C-channel steel reinforcement is required.
- Panel thickness varies according to the tank height and pressure resistance requirements, depending on the overall tank design.

For GRP/FRP water tanks, the accessories and installation methods are basically the same as those used for hot-dip galvanized water tanks in terms of overall structure and assembly.
However, for components such as flanges, water outlets, overflow outlets, and other areas that require openings in the panels, we recommend making the openings on site rather than in the factory. This is because the manufacturing process and material properties of GRP/FRP panels differ from those of hot-dip galvanized steel and stainless steel. Once an opening is made, the original panel strength may be affected, increasing the risk of secondary damage during transportation and handling.
